31 Aug 1906 Addison, Edith Whita 2 mos W F 12 10 78 Per Find A Grave Contributor, Amys, Dec 2014 -- Edith has a Cenotaph in Green Mountain Cemetery, Boulder, Colorado. See Memorial #139934349 at www.findagrave.com. Edith's middle name is Whitaker, her father is Herbert Addison who died 1949 and her mother is Alfreda W Addison who died 1967. Per Amy, 18 Dec 2014 -- I used the cemetery burial index as well as census records and city directories on ancestry.com. Little Edith's parents are Alfreda Whitaker Addison and Herbert Addison. Herbert was a mining engineer, and they were living in Denver at the time of poor little Edith's death. Alfreda, Edith's mom, was the daughter of Alfred E. Whitaker (a librarian) and Laura Gunning Whitaker. Alfreda had a twin brother, Alfred Horace Whitaker, as well as a sister Grace Whitaker Wagner. All of these relatives of Edith - her mom, dad, maternal grandmother and grandfather, aunt and uncle, are all buried together in Green Mountain Cemetery, Boulder, CO. They are all inscribed on 3 different faces of the obelisk monument in the midst of them, and they are all in the cemetery records here. Edith is on the same face as her parents, but she's not in the cemetery records. We now know that is because she was actually buried in Riverside. Found a Charles Anglemyer 84, b. in Ohio, widowed, father b. in Canada, mother b. in Pennsylvania, listed as an inmate on a Denver County Poor Farm. 1920 U.S. Fed. Census, Denver City, Denver County, Colorado. Found a Charles A. Anglemyer 70, b. in Ohio, father b . in Pennsylvania, mother b. in Canada, listed with wife Millie 59, b. in Vermont, parents b. in Vermont. 1910 U.S. Fed. Census, Denver City, Denver County, Colorado. Found a Charles A. Anglemyer 64, b. in Ohio, father b. in Pennsylvania, mother b. in Canada, listed with wife Permelia 60, b. in New York, father b . in England, mother b. in New York; and dau: Della G. 25, b. in Kansas, father b. in Ohio, mother b. in New York. Note: Charles is the father of Grace Della Anglemyer. Per Ginny Suelzle, great granddaughter of Charles, 15 Feb 2014. Anglemyer, Charles A. – Charles was born near Toledo, Ohio in December of 1845. His parents were William and Joanna Hilborn Anglemyer. The Anglemyer’s came to America in 1752 and settled in Pennsylvania. Charles’ grandfather, John (1780-1824), and his father, William (1807-abt 1886) were born there. The family was in Columbiana County, Ohio when John died in 1824 and William at, 17 years of age, became the ‘man of the house’. They returned to Pennsylvania where William married Joanna Hilborn in Bucks County on December 30, 1828. Joanna was born in the Ontario area of Canada and had family there. She and William apparently lived in Canada at times as their oldest daughter, Mary, was born in Canada in 1831. After her birth they must have returned to Ohio as their oldest son, James, was born there in 1832. Then back to Canada where a son, William, was born in 1836 and a daughter, Joanna, born in 1839. At the time of the 1840 census they were back in Green, Columbiana County, Ohio; and then moved to Henry County, Ohio, where Charles was born in 1845. From the “Fayette County History” (Iowa) published in 1878: ANGLEMYER, WILLIAM, farmer, S. 29; P.O. Brush Creek; born in Bucks Co., Penn., April 5, 1807, where he married Joanna Hilborn Dec. 30, 1828; they emigrated and settled on their present farm in March, 1860, consisting of 290 acres, worth $8,000. Republican; members of Christian Church. Mary A., James, William H., Joanna and Charles are the names of their children. Mr. A. purchased his land in this county in 1857, but did not settle on his farm till 1860. In 1860 they had moved on to Brush Creek, Fairfield, Iowa. The two oldest, Mary Ann and James were no longer with the family. Both had married and, for now, remained in Henry County Ohio. Charles Anglemyer and Permelia Massee were married on December 24, 1874 in Fayette County, Iowa. Their first child, Irene, was born in Iowa in 1876. From this time on, the Massee and Anglemyer families traveled together. By 1880 they were farming in Rooks County Kansas. Both of William’s sisters and their families also made the trek to Kansas. They settled in the area of Stockton, which had only been first settled in 1871 and the area was still very ‘Wild West’ in character. Sometime between 1880 and 1885 William Anglemyer died. Joanna lived to the age of 89 years and died on February 2, 1899. Permelia’s father, Edmund Massee, died in 1882, and her mother, Lucina, died in 1887. Both are buried in Stockton, Kansas. (I have not found the gravesites of William and Joanna.) A sister of Charles, Joanna Anglemyer Carr Fallis died in 1920. Her second marriage was to a prominent attorney in Stockton and her nephew, Fredrick Burlin was living with them at the time of the 1885 census. At the time of the 1900 census, Fredrick’s mother, Mary Anglemyer Burlin was in Topeka, Kansas at the State Insane Asylum. I expect you may have read stories of pioneer women losing their minds on the Kansas plains in these days. It was a very difficult life and many women lost their minds due to day after day of hot, dry winds, blowing sand, no rain, crops failing and more strife. Their homes were often not much more than a cave dug into the ground. The 1900 census record is 20 pages (plus one page with only one entry). Each page lists 50 people. The first 3 pages are all staff of the facility. Pages 4 thru line 14 of page 9 are women. The rest are all men. This is a sad story. I have not located a date of death or burial site for Mary Ann. Charles and Permelia had two more children while they were in Kansas. The first was Della Grace, born in 1883. She never married and lived with her parents for most of her life. Their youngest child, Martin, was born on December 12, 1884. All of his life he believed he was born in December 1885 and all of his official records will give that date. However, he is listed in the March, 1885 Kansas State census as 3 months old, so he must have been born in the previous December. Somehow the family just lost track of his birth year. All his adult years in Iowa and Kansas, Charles worked as a farmer. Sometime between 1889 and 1891 the family moved to Denver. I wonder if his sister’s commitment to the Insane Asylum could have influenced that decision. I first find them in the Denver City Directory in 1892. They are not listed in 1889. There is no Directory available for 1890 and 1891. They were in Denver in August of 1891 as their oldest daughter, Irene, died of Diphtheria at that time and is buried at Fairmount Cemetery. All records of Charles while he lived in Denver indicate he worked as a Teamster, as did his son, Martin. Permelia dies in January of 1914 and Charles marries Millie Mathers in September of the next year. The 1922 directory implies that Mille and Charles were no longer together. In 1923 Charles and daughter Della Grace were living together at 1303 Osage. Millie died in January, 1926. There was a lot of turmoil in their lives at this time and I expect this may have been when they were forced to move to the Poor Farm. Charles would have been about 80 years old. As those were the days before social security, he most likely lived past the time he had reserves for and was too old to find gainful employment. Life expectancy at that time was much younger and most of the population had spent their lives farming. As a farmer you were lucky to get a crop every year in order to feed your family, and be able to barter or sell enough for the extras your family needed. Not much chance to save for an old age well into your 80’s. Charles died at 90 years old in July of 1936 –a year after social security was enacted, but not implemented until 1940. His daughter, Della had died in December, 1931 at the age of 48. At the corner of 9th and Corona is the elementary school Martin and his sisters attended. It was built in 1889, originally named Corona school; the name was changed to Dora Moore in 1929. The school is listed as a national landmark and was completely restored inside and out in 2004. The photo below was taken on the steps of this school. Group of children: This school photo shows Martin and his sister, Della Grace, taken about 1895 on the front steps of Corona School. Martin is the little round face in the very center of the photo and his sister Grace is the little round face in the black dress in the front row on the far right. Compare these faces to the faces in the studio photo below taken about 1890. I have cropped them from the school photo and pasted them to the studio photo for easy comparison. My mother had identified her father, Martin, but we are using a best guess for Della. Martin and Grace: I am guessing this photo of Martin and Della was taken about 1891 or 1892. Della as born in August 1883 and Martin a year and four months later. Note how much taller Della is than Martin and there is not a lot of difference in their ages. Martin was a small person, even as an adult. Irene Anglemyer: Irene was the oldest child of Charles and Permelia. She was born in 1876 and died of diphtheria in August of 1891 in Denver. This photo must have been taken shortly before she died. I regret not having any photos of Charles. (2). 29Apr1918, Rocky Mountain News, p2, News Article -- [“Suicide Lies Near City Jail For 12 Hours”]~ “All was quiet along Cherry creek Saturday night, when suddenly what sounded like a pistol shot was heard, just back of the police station.’ “Somnolent house men, wearied by the monotony of an eventless evening, stated out of their repose.’ “”Must have been a gun.”” A patrolman said.’” “Nothing but an auto tire blown up, as usual,” suggest another.’ A cry rose from the outer darkness, but the officers who were listening with intent ears after the explosion, concluded it was merely the screaming of the wind. They fell back into quietude,’ “When dawn broke, a “trusty” started to perform his assigned tasks about the jail, when he almost toppled over an obstruction lying back of the jail in the parkway which adjoins Speer boulevard. He leaned over and discovered it was the body of a man.’ “”Say, if you’re that drunk, you’d better get out of this before the cops find you.” Said the trusty, leaning over and shaking the prostrate figure.’ “But there was no response.’ "“The trusty stretched out a cautious hand and touched the features. The face was cold.’ “With a scream, the trusty ran to jailer McNally and begged to be locked “in solitary.” McNally complied and asked the reason. It was then the trusty announced his findings of the dead man.’ Coroner Horan took charge of the body and established identification by means of a memorandum book found in the man’s coat pocket. It gave the man’s name as Walter Beavans and Louisville Ky., as his home.’ “In the rigor of death, one clenched hand still grasped a revolver containing four loaded shells. There was also one empty shell.’ “The police concluded the report heard twelve hours before was a suicidal shot.” (13). 15 Oct 1918, Rocky Mountain News, p9, Deaths - “BEAVANS – April 28, 1918, Walter Beavans. His parents divorced when he was 6 yrs old, and he lived with his mother and her family. His mother died when he was 14 yrs old and according to his father's account, he spent his entire life as a drifter, but staying in Colorado. He was illiterate, as was his father, thus probably the reason for the different spelling of his name. According to several census listings he always used the last name BROWNER. Newton was my first cousin, 2 times removed, so I have very little other information on him."" Hofmann 6

If one was hard pressed for money the other was ready and willing to give him any or all of his own.’ “Clark, after recovering from the shock of the unexpected death of his friend, said: “We met each other in Denver when we both went to work on a railroad construction project. We got along from the start, with the exception of a few squables over our nationality.”’ “He said they had never been separated for a single day. After saving a sizable stake, Clark became ill and the combined savings went to doctors in his behalf. “I think it was worrying over my condition that caused his death,” Clark said.’ “Clark refused to remain in bed following his attack, but insisted that the funeral arrangements for his partner be handled by no one but himself.” (13). 25 Feb 1932, Rocky Mountain News, p. 17, Funeral Notice: “John Cannon, 1773 Williams st.
